Yayoi Kusama Museum

Recently, on a rainy afternoon, I ventured to the Yayoi Kusama Museum between Waseda and Kagurazaka stations. If you are unfamiliar with her, she’s an artist from Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture who in recent years has become famous worldwide for her dotted pumpkin sculptures. You might be asking yourself “Why pumpkins?” Well, as Kusama explained in a 2015 interview: "I love pumpkins because of their humorous form, warm feeling, and a human-like quality and form. My desire to create works of pumpkins still continues. I have enthusiasm as if I were still a child.”

Above is a picture from inside Yayoi Kusama’s "All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins" infinity mirror room installation. It really did feel as if the luminous yellow and black pumpkins were multiplying around me.

つい先日、雨の日の午後、早稲田駅と神楽坂駅の間にある草間弥生美術館に行ってみました。 彼女のことをよく知らないという人のために説明すると、彼女は長野県松本市出身の芸術家で、ここ数年はドット柄のかぼちゃの彫刻で世界中で有名になってきています。「なんでかぼちゃ？」と思うかもしれませんね。草間さんは2015年のインタビューの中でこのように説明しています。「かぼちゃのユーモアな形や、ぬくもりのある感じ、人間のような質や形が大好きです。かぼちゃの作品を作りたいという私の欲望はまだこれからも続きます。私はまるで子どものように情熱を持っているのです」

「かぼちゃへのつきることのない愛のすべて」という合わせ鏡を用いた展示の中で撮影した写真を載せますね。黄色と黒に光るかぼちゃが本当に私の周りで増えていっているような感じがしました。
