Songs and movies are constantly being remade, reinvented, redone, made over and given sequels in order to reuse ideas. Hollywood, which releases the most and biggest-budget releases tends to set the trends with regards to the type of movies that are popular throughout the years. For example, in the 80’s there were many teenage or coming-of-age movies that gained notoriety such as “the Breakfast club” or “Sixteen Candles”. Later on in the 90’s and early 2000’s there was a resurgence of coming-of-age movies with the release of “10 Things I Hate about You” ,”Clueless” and “Mean Girls”. There was a period when big-budget romantic movies ruled, including “Titanic”, “Armageddon”, “Pearl Harbor” and more. Then there was a period when sports movies based on true events were popular releases, like “The Blind Side” and “Any Given Sunday”. During the early 2000’s, blockbuster movies about the end of the world or the human race being wiped out were extremely prevalent. These included “I am Legend”, “World War Z” and “The Day after Tomorrow”. Not to mention, superhero movies have tons of sequels or follow-ups and the most reboots throughout generations, especially the Batman, Superman and Spider-Man movies. These have countless reboots done once every other year.

One movie managed to stand out amongst the crowd to me and stand true to its originality. That movie was “Jurassic Park”. Jurassic Park is an action-adventure sci-fi film released in 1993 about a wildlife park on an uninhabited island that had real-life dinosaurs. The movie followed the adventure of a group of people stuck on the island filled with dinosaurs after major issues arose at the park. The movie featured real life animatronics as well as special effects, sounds and imagery. The overall feel of the movie was incredible, with feelings of excitement, suspense, mystery and action. It ended up being an absolute box-office smash hit and broke many records the year of its release. It later ended up getting sequels in 1997 as Jurassic Park: the Lost World, in 2001 as Jurassic Park III, in 2015 as Jurassic World and in 2018 as Jurassic World II: Fallen Kingdom. A third Jurassic World is going to be released this year. In the end, the sequel in 2001, Jurassic Park III, would become my favorite installment of the Jurassic Park series.

During the 2001 one, it followed the adventure of the dinosaur expert from the 1st movie, who was tricked into helping a divorced couple rescue their kids after they got lost on the island. The movie was the first of the installments I had seen at the time and the experience was one I could never forget, especially the feeling I experienced as the actors ran through fields of dinosaurs or the eerie sounds of a velociraptor before it even appeared on screen. I was a child at the time, but I could remember the events, the dinosaurs, the emotions, and the visuals very distinctly, even years later after watching the movies.

Lori

Vocabulary

notoriety (noun) – the state of being famous or well known for some bad quality or deed resurgence (noun) – an increase or revival after a period of little activity, popularity, or occurrence
prevalent (adjective) – widespread or common in a particular area or at a particular time
eerie (adjective) – strange and frightening

As time goes on, we see that originality lessens and lessens, especially in entertainment fields.
