Critical thinking is the ability to think about things in a logical way. It teaches people to make the right decisions and to consider things carefully. Teaching critical thinking is becoming more and more important as the world becomes more complex.

Recently, because of the Internet, there is a lot of media that presents false information. SNS is used to spread rumors and other false information. Even the normal news should be looked at using critical thinking. A big problem is false information often appeals to human desires and fears. People in a modern society need to be able to tell the difference between true and false information.

One example of something that appeals to our desires are get-rich-quick schemes. A get-rich-quick scheme is a scheme where a person believes that they can get rich quickly by doing something simple. For example, a company offers to sell a person a lot of a product at a low price. The company says that the person can resell the product for a profit. Unfortunately, it is difficult to sell the product. The company makes a lot of money selling the product but the person ends up losing money.

On the other hand appeals to fear are often used in politics. Politicians will try to demonize other people to benefit themselves. They will say false things about groups of people that harm those groups. Targets of demonization may include other politicians but it often includes innocent minorities. People often are easily influenced by their fears and can be made to do things if they are afraid. Demonization is very unhealthy for society.

A problem is that critical thinking should be taught when people are very young. Children can change their way of thinking much easier than an adult can. Adults often believe they already know the answers to life’s questions. Adults often do not look for things that challenge their way of thinking.

That is why I think it is important to teach children critical thinking from a very young age. Children should be taught to look for appeals to desire and fear even in basic things. Young children can be taught basic decision-making and older children can be taught to read articles and consume media in an intelligent way. As they grow older they can be taught to think critically about more and more difficult things.

If I started a charity it would be to promote critical thinking. The charity would provide a free critical thinking curriculum to schools. Also, the charity would create free online games and game apps. This would be fun and at the same time teach children about critical thinking at the same time. Finally, the charity would ask the government to teach critical thinking classes in school as part of a normal curriculum. This would make sure that everybody could learn about critical thinking.

As the world becomes more complex it becomes more important for people to think logically. People need to know how to tell true information from false information. People need to promote critical thinking in schools to promote a healthy society. My charity would promote this critical thinking.

Nathaniel

Vocabulary

logical (adj.) ? using clear, sound and sensible reasoning
to appeal (v) ? to be attractive or exciting to someone
to demonize (v) ? to try to make someone or a group of people seem as if they are evil
minority (n) ? a small group in society that is different from the rest because of their race, religion, political beliefs, etc.
to influence (v) ? the power to have an effect on people or things
curriculum (n) ? the subjects studied in a school, college, etc. and what each subject includes

If I started a charity it would be to promote critical thinking in schools.
