This is especially true with certain groups of fans like “Harry Potter” or “The Lord of the Rings.” Apparently you cannot be a real fan if you have not read the books, and this obviously is not limited to those groups of people or even limited to novels. Someone told me recently that I was not a real fan of “JoJo” because I was unwilling to read the comic and preferred to watch it animated.

Another huge problem I have with books is the insane amount of description that many authors include. This hatred probably stems from high school English class where we were forced to overanalyze every detail on every page looking for symbolism, but it feels like a lot of authors are paid by the word. I do not care if someone’s eyes are “golden like the apple juice spilled on a sandy beach in Western Australia.” (What?) Just tell me his eyes were light brown. That was not a real quote, but a lot of authors write like that. The best part about a movie is all of that is skipped over. Good storytelling through film will tell me everything I need to know and leave me feeling satisfied in two hours while a book will take 500 pages to do the same. Anyone who disagrees is fooling themselves.

Travis

Vocabulary
stem from (phr.v) ? to be caused by or to come from someone or something
symbolism (n) ? use of symbols to present ideas or qualities

I feel like people only read books just to say they read books, just to pretend they are better than people who prefer t…

[4

post-13034","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-essays
